Location: The City of San Jose is located in the Santa Clara county and it is named the capital of Silicon Valley. History: The first civil settlement in Alta California was founded by Lt. Jose Joaquín Moraga as a farming community on November 1777. It was then called San Jose de Guadalupe and was moved from its original location to where downtown San Jose stands today. The town was ruled by Mexico until it was annexed to the United States when California became a state, being San Jose the first state capital.
In 1906 San Jose was struck by the San Francisco earthquake, leaving 100 people dead and many wounded and homeless.
In the early 1940s, during world war II, fear was a constant and violence against Mexicans and Japanese was very high.
The 50s and 60s represented for San Jose quite a boom in economic and population growth asi it did all through California. By the 70s, San Jose was the largest city in Silicon Valley and its housing costs increased severely. Despite this, San Jose keeps growing until today.
