History: Although Spanish occupation of California began in 1769, it has been proven that prehistoric native populations inhabited the area for at least 10,000 years. Thy were divided into about 100 known tribal groups and made up one of the most densely populated areas of the prehistoric west coast. As hunters and farmers living in sedentary communities, these were relatively peaceful people until the Spanish occupation.
The first Spanish expedition to this land was sent out by Hernán Cortés, to be carried out by Fortún Jimenez, who reached Baja California without major return to the conqueror who later abandoned the project. On September 28 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo while looking for the mythical straight of Anian, landed in the San Diego Bay, becoming the first Spaniard to settle in Alta California.

Climatic Features: California has a varied climate with two predominating seasons. Summer days are dry and long, and its evenings are cool, while winter is rainy and mild. The mountain weather is a little different, where snow is a constant from November to April. Little rainfall is a constant through the year in the state of California.
California´s climate is divided into four regions, the central coastal area, where temperature tends to differ very little, with mild summers and winters; The San Francisco- Monterrey area, where temperature difference between summer and winter rarely exceeds 10°F (6°C). San Francisco is also usually covered in Fog and surrounded by heavy winds. The next climatic region is the Central Valley with hot summers and cool winters. The last region is called the Imparial valley and it is characterized by extremely hot and dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C).
Average annual temperatures for the state range http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/CA_cc_us.html

Average Temperatures: from 47°F (8°C) in the Sierra Nevada to 73°F (23°C) in the Imperial Valley.
The highest temperature recorded in the US registered in Death Valley on 10 July 1913: 134° (57°C),
